Many men nearing their 50’s or 60’s find that they are no longer sleeping through the night, but are awakening, needing to urinate. They’re showing the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland. An enlarged prostate can cause symptoms that are relatively minor, but symptoms can also be severe and can greatly disrupt one’s life– all the way up to total urinary blockage and a visit to the emergency room. There are some prostate treatments, ranging from natural herbs to surgery, that can reduce or eliminate symptoms.
Inability to sleep through the night because of the need to get up several times a night to urinate is one of the most annoying, and even dangerous symptoms. Men may need to structure their days so that they’re never far from a bathroom because of sudden and urgent needs to urinate. They may find that they “dribble.” In severe cases, some men become completely unable to “hold it.” There may be discomfort and pain.
Fortunately, there are prescription drugs, and even natural, non-prescription prostate treatments that can help. Occasionally, where nothing else helps, men even have their prostate glands surgically removed.
Doctors don’t totally understand why some mens’ prostates enlarge, and others don’t. It is clear that high levels of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the prostate has something to do with it, because when the action of the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT is blocked by drugs or natural substances, and DHT levels in the prostate are reduced, prostate glands shrink.
The primary mode of operation of the non-prescription prostate treatments is to block the activity of 5-alpha reductase.
The most commonly-used herbal treatment is saw palmetto, which has been studied for years, especially in Europe, where it’s widely used. In the United States, prescriptions drugs like Avodart and Proscar, which also block the action of the enzyme are more widely used. The prescription drugs can be effective, although not on all men. Of course they are more expensive and have many more side effects, and some studies have shown that they are no more effective than some of the non-prescription products.
There is another class of prescription prostate treatments, which work differently. Drugs like “Flomax” work by relaxing smooth muscles surrounding the urethra and in the neck of the bladder. This can reduce pressure on the urethra, and permit the bladder to empty more completely, and allow for a stronger urine stream. They can be quite effective for some men, but a lot of men aren’t helped much, and there can be annoying, and even severe side effects.
